The Scottish Highlands top the list of bucket list locations in the UK, with four in 10 choosing a holiday over international hotpots as their dream destination. The latest research reveals the top UK bucket list destinations across the country, as well as attitudes towards must-visit UK and international destinations.
Research by holidaycottages.co.uk found that 38% of respondents would rather visit more places in the UK in their lifetime than abroad, with 43% saying they would like to visit more ‘home places, without giving up a trip abroad. . Just 14% said they would rather visit places abroad in their lifetime than in the UK, showing that holidays are here to stay, even with the lifting of restrictions on international travel.
Analyzing the research, the top 10 staycation spots for Brits are:
- Scottish Highlands (30%)
- Cornwall (19%)
- Edinburgh (19%)
- Cumbria/Lake (18%)
- The Cotswolds (17%)
- Yorkshire Dales (16%)
- Snowdonia (15%)
- Whitby/Robin Hood’s Bay (12%)
- Peak District (12%)
- Brecon Beacons (11%)
The Scottish Highlands topped the list, followed closely by Cornwall and Edinburgh, which was the only city included in the top 10. The ever-popular Cumbria Lake District was fourth, while the Cotswolds rounded the top five.
When asked about the places that put them on their to-do list, the top five reasons are:
- I think the area has a lot of natural beauty (52%)
- I’ve never been there but I’ve been wanting to for a while (46%)
- I saw it in the cinema/on TV and I want to visit it for myself (26%)
- I would like to visit every part of the UK in my lifetime (22%)
- My friends/family visited me and said good things (16%)
Travel restrictions over the past two years have led many Britons to explore the beauty of the UK rather than holiday abroad, so it’s great to see that 52% of 1,000 people surveyed now want enjoy the beautiful scenery.
