Where it’s hot in February for the winter break as travel rules ease


Getting away to a warm place is a priority for many as more and more Omicron travel restrictions in Scotland have been lifted.

Nicola Sturgeon announced on Tuesday that pre-arrival Covid testing for fully vaccinated travelers will be a thing of the past on February 11.

The requirement for pre-departure testing already ended on January 10, so the decision to end post-arrival testing will make vacationing much easier in 2022 – and cheaper.

With cold and gloomy days, those Scots with wanderlust will already be feeling the itch to escape to warmer places.

Scotland’s average February high is 5.5C, but the relaxation of travel rules has opened up an easier way to fly somewhere warm.

Spain is one of the most popular winter holiday destinations for Britons for this reason.

You won’t need testing or quarantine to enter the country, although Spanish vaccination requirements are set to change on February 1 – find out what you need to know here.

Located off the coast of northwest Africa, Tenerife is the largest island of the Canary Islands where average temperatures in February are 20°C.

Other Canary Island destinations like La Palma and Lanzarote are just as hot at this time of year.

Luckily the Scots can be there in four and a half hours via budget airlines like easyJet, Ryanair, Jet2 and TUI.

Average temperature in February: 20 C

The southernmost region of Portugal is the Algarve, known for its picturesque golden cliffs and sandy beaches.

If you fancy hitting the beach this winter, the spectacular Algarve coastline has plenty to offer couples, groups of friends and even families.

The average February high here is 20C and Scots can fly direct to Faro in just three hours with Ryanair from Edinburgh or Prestwick Airport.

Average temperature in February: 16 C

Malta, the island country in the middle of the Mediterranean, is a fabulous destination not only for its clear blue waters, but also as a cultural break and foodie destination.

Not to mention that Malta holds its own carnival every February and this year’s celebrations take place from February 25 to March 1.

The small archipelago reaches an average high of 16C in February and Scots can fly direct from Edinburgh in just under four hours with Ryanair.

Average temperature in February: 23 C

Florida is one of the most popular long-haul destinations for Britons for many reasons.

A huge draw for people of all ages is its many theme parks from Disneyworld to Harry Potter and, of course, the sun and the heat.

Average temperatures reach 23°C in February, enough to make a Scotsman sweat.
