Women’s basketball gears up for overseas tour

NEW YORK – Columbia women’s basketball will make its first overseas trip since 2016 on Saturday when it leaves New York to begin a week-long foreign tour of Morocco and Spain. The Lions will spend three nights in Morocco and four nights in Spain before returning to the United States on Sunday August 28.

“It will be a great opportunity for our players, our coaches and our entire staff to start the season together,” said the Columbia head coach. Megan Griffith said. “We’ll get to experience something outside of our comfort zone and be immersed in a different culture and world. I think that’s something really unique at Columbia – we really care about people’s lives. our student-athletes off the basketball court, but we can use the basketball as a vehicle to get there.

“We had several reasons for choosing these destinations. Firstly, we have two Spanish players in our squad, Marie-Lobon and Noa Comesana. Traveling to Spain will give them the opportunity to show the rest of the team their home country. We also hope to recruit more in Spain and really increase the visibility of Columbia University in the country. We believe that Morocco is a country and a place where many of our players will never travel in their life. We wanted to take our team to a different place and a unique opportunity to see the world and experience a different way of life.”

The tour will give the Lions some extra preparation after a historic 2021-22 campaign that saw the team post an overall record of 25-7 and 12-2 in the Ivy League, setting program records for wins and conference wins. Columbia entered and won its first postseason game in 36 years and advanced to the quarterfinals of its first Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT). Its run to the WNIT quarterfinals is the deepest of any team in Ivy League history.

Next week’s trip will feature three exhibition games, one in Morocco and two in Spain. Lions will also have the chance to explore historic sites and attractions in the Moroccan cities of Tangier and Chefchaouen, as well as the Spanish cities of Granada and Seville.
